My Rottweiler viciously asking for attention

Agreed. These are not first-time dog owner type dogs.

I've owned high-drive dogs my entire life. Right now, I own a Husky & a Caucasian Ovtcharka.

  1. Instinct is instinct. Dogs are bred for a reason, like retrieving, herding, heeling, tracking, hunting, etc. Pitbull types were bred for "catching", guarding, dog fighting, and gameness (meaning, how determined they are)

  2. A lot of well meaning people who buy into the propaganda end up being a part of the problem. Pits are NOT for first time dog owners, they are not your dog park type. They aren't good off leash because of their high prey drive, they are determined so they won't back off, they are also bred to be dog aggressive.

  3. My dog is not dog aggressive but boy is he territorial. I am already working on this with a trainer. Now, he's never bitten anyone but I've noticed how he guards me and the house, how he guards children and infants, how he pins down dogs who get attention from me, etc. These dogs need to be raised differently than your regular dogs. I NEVER in a million years though I'd be the type to not let my dog on furniture but my trainer told me not to, that it will exacerbate the problem. I believe him.

  4. Like all working dogs, they are excellent at what they were bred for like guarding. If you live in a particularly dangerous place then there is no better guard than an APT.

  5. And like all working dogs, they need LOTS of exercise. Some dogs when they don't get enough, they become destructive (I.e. Husky) others, become aggressive like GSD's and APT's.

  6. Finally, since there are very few breeding programs for pitbulls, there is uncontrolled development of the breed. Meaning there is no one out there breeding out aggression or prey drive. Even then I've seen very well bred GSD's become aggressive over a lack of stimulation, imagine how rampant these genes might be for a dog that is mostly kitchen bred.
