The Nebraska legislature has an education committee meeting TODAY to debate LB396. This bill would allow Nebraska college/university graduates (associates, bachelors, masters, or doctoral) to be in-state students for any further degrees. Please contact Senator Groene to support this bill!

I'm dead set against this. Let me spend just a moment to explain why to all of you. It's no secret that the Nebraska University system has one of the most affordable systems in the U.S. A large part of the reason is a great deal of education is subsidized by state taxes, and donors. In addittion the current out of state tuition rates likely allow them to keep in state tuition lower.

It sounds great in theory however for this to happen the money will either be made up by charging higher in state rates or getting more money from the state/taxes. These people come from other states with public education systems. Also many of these people likely registered their cars in other states while receiving their other degree.

We need to preserve our affordable education system for true Nebraska residents. This would force tax payers and or in state students to pay more money to make this happen. It may be a slight amount of money, but I could see it become very common for out of state students to attend a community college here then transfer to UNL to avoid the out of state tuition.
