As a follower of Christ (I try not to conflate myself with Christians anymore, I'm more of a deist) what you say is spot on and terrifying in a doomsday conspiracy sort of way. These people have become the Pharisees that Christ rebelled against. If I were to fully believe in the more mystical aspects of my beliefs, this would be a sure-fire sign of the second coming imo. It's not a stretch to look at the world and see apocalyptic prophecy seemingly unfolding. The behavior of these people is genuinely terrifying to me in and existential manner of speaking and as horrific to me, on a human level, as it is to basically everyone else. The weirdest thing to me is that these people actually welcome the second coming with no understanding of how that would play out.
