Off Topic Thread: Community

I don't explicitly identify myself as part of a particular community. But I know on a general sense I am associated with a community or communities.

My main issue with any and all communities is the elitist mindset that comes with said community. It's usually an "us" or "them" mentality. It really wears on me and I'm pretty sick of seeing it.

It is okay to not like something and there will not be an apocalyptic world ending event if we disagree on a particular point. There's also no need to spew venom and make death threats to other individuals because of their particular stance on a subject. It is possible to have two conflicting ideas in your head and be okay with them.

I also find it highly hypocritical when many members of a community have a borderline "messianic" view of a particular character and their ideals. But they don't take those same ideals and internalize them into their own lives. Seriously, just stop. If you really do love <insert favorite character here>, then stop acting like a tool. Don't treat another person or persons like shit just because they don't think a particular way.

One thing I can't wrap my head around is why people feel the need to act like assholes if we disagree on a particular point. Whether it be comic books, video games, or one's stance on politics.

In the wake of the Orlando shooting and the Brock Turner case, I'm appalled at what we as a society have become. Not to sound like an extremely negative Nancy, but I can't help but hear Magneto's voice in my head from the 90's X-Men cartoon.

"You're a fool, Charles. Look at them. They can't even make peace with each other."

I'd prefer to not associate myself a particular "community" and just say, "I'm a human being"

When we as a collective whole can stop persecuting each other for their sexuality, ethnicity, creed, or gender, then I can say I'm proud to be a human.
