Official Discussion: Blade Runner 2049 [SPOILERS]

I should say first off that as a child I saw the original Blade Runner in 1982, and have been obsessed with it ever since, especially the score (I have quite a lot of those bootlegs that used to go around in the pre-digital era).

I quite like this sequel; it's a nice riff on the original, although in my mind it can't equal the original or Vangelis' score. Having said that, there are several things I like here: I like that they didn't try to re-make the original, and I like that they tried to do different things, rather than try to replicate the original tone and pacing.

Having said that, a key difference between the two is that the original moved much more on the ground: We see Deckard standing on a street reading a newspaper in the rain; we see him in different sectors of the city, such as Taffy's nightclub, outside the Bradbury building; we see the replicant animal market, the outside Chinese restaurant, etc. In this new movie, however, there's far less walking and driving, and more travelling by spinners (flying cars); we go to different cities, and outside the city.

I'm not complaining, I like that they took us to new places, and the filmmakers did it very well. But for me, Deckard standing on his balcony looking at the city below, or eating Chinese take-out while Gaff flies him through the city... The pacing in many places in the original was actually slower and moodier than this sequel, despite its length. Again, its all fine:)
