Only a Cubs fan will understand

I love the White Sox. I have since 2004. I first got into baseball in 2003 when my grandma would bring me a week's worth of sports pages from the Herald every Sunday when my grandparents would come over for lunch. I would pour over the box scores and soak up as much as I could about the game. I loved listening to her complain about Zambrano (or Zombrowski as she would sometimes call him), root for Sosa and Alou, marvel at Prior and Wood. I would fall asleep to Cubs games and when they weren't playing I would listen to The Score. Anything that would help me learn about the sport. I looked forward to every Sunday when my grandparents would come over and I would sit in the living room and talk to my grandma about the Cubs. I have a very distinct memory of NLDS Game 5 in 2003. The Cubs were holding a 2-0 lead over the Braves when Aramis Ramirez hit a two-run home run to add some insurance. It was late at night but I hopped out of my bed with my radio in my hand and I ran to the kitchen. My mom was up working on something in the kitchen and she was surprised to see me up so late. I told her that I just had to call grandma and tell her about the home run. My mom insisted that grandma was probably asleep because it was so late, but she let me call anyway. She picked up the phone almost immediately and I said "Did you see it!? Did you see his home run!?" I'll never forget the way her voice sounded when she said "Yep, I was watching with you." She passed away four years ago at the age of 95. Never got to see her Cubs win a championship. I'm a Sox fan now but I watch the Cubs for her. I get excited about this team for her. I miss her terribly. Even my mom, who doesn't care much for sports, is getting emotional with the Cubs success because it reminds us all of grandma. I won't get to celebrate with her, but I know she's watching the games with me.
