“Stopping the circulation of [Shrier’s] book and these ideas is 100% a hill I will die on,”
I mean this is just not a thing someone who's a staff member of the ACLU should say. Yes, the ideas in that book are legitimately harmful and misinformation (I'm FtM trans too). I still wouldn't say that I want to "stop the circulation" of this book and these ideas and that "that's a hill I will die on"... and if I were an ACLU lawyer I definitely wouldn't say that. It genuinely disappointed me to hear one of the few trans men in a visible role like that say this. I don't feel represented by him.
The ACLU is not a trans rights group, nor is it a universal "we promote good things and reject bad things" group. It is literally a civil liberties group, when it comes to things like disenfranchisement of black voters then yes absolutely they should be involved with that, when it comes to a crappy book like this they should not.
