Please tone down Ghost's forced 'funniness'

WALL OF TEXT INCOMING. TL;DR AT THE END.

This. So much this.

The dialogue we've heard so far (at least for the strike) is just cringeworthy.

I think that the dialogue we heard in Homecoming was ok. It didn't feel too out of place for the most part and it was fine according to what was happening. The only instances of cheesy dialogue in this mission were when our ghost describes the cabal at the beginning of the mission, which was completely unnecesary, and when Amanda says "time to kick them where it hurts", but aside from that it was good.

On the other hand, the strike dialogue was just terrible. Many people say that the context of the story might help it sound better, but I think that won't be the case. Many people also say that it's ok for our ghost to be like that because we've been trough hell, but I think that is not a good excuse. The characters of other games, movies, tv shows, etc. have also been trough hell in a lot of occasions, and they don't start making lame jokes out of the blue just because of it.

What people doesn't seem to grasp is that there's a difference between funny dialogue that doesn't feel out of place and cringeworthy dialogue that feels completely out of place.

Just look at Sgt Johnson from Halo. He was the comedic relief of the franchise. His lines were funny when they needed to be and they didn't feel out of place at all. He also wasn't making jokes all the time, he knew that when things got serious he had to be serious. The jokes he made were well thought out most of the time (if not all the time). For example:

  • In the mission Metropolis from Halo 2, when the marines were scared to follow after the scarab and needed motivation, Johnson brought a tank with him and said: "Usually, the good Lord works in mysterious ways. But not today! This here is 66 tons of straight-up, H.E-spewing dee-vine intervention! If God is love, then you can call me 'Cupid'!” When Cortana thanked him for the tank, and as a joke said that the Chief never gave her anything, Johnson said: "Oh, I know what the ladies like".

Those lines had the right amount of comedy in them and were also appropiate for the situation.

Our ghost on the other hand... He's trying to be funny all the time, most his jokes aren't funny and they feel completely out of place to the point where they're cringeworthy. There's a time and place for everything, and a character who's trying to make jokes about everything, everywhere and at all times is just not a good character, he's a clown. I wouldn't like to carry a clown with me everywhere I go, specially when my own character doesn't have a voice and this clown is all I have to talk for me. For example:

  • Those lines about the "Vex milk waterfall" and about "the light that looks like a big ghost" were plain bad. They're out of place and don't contribute to anything in the story.

  • The interactions between our ghost and failsafe were... they were terrible too. They sound like two kids fighting as opposed to two AIs fighting. There are a thousand different ways they could express their dislike for each other, or the competence that seems to be going on between them, and of all those ways, Bungie chooses to make them sound like two kids fighting? Give me a break.

This is the only chance this franchise is going to get to show that it can be taken seriously and to show what it's capable of in terms of storytelling and character development. If this is all they can do then I fear for its future.

Many people say that this is fine because the game is rated T. Well, even that does not justify it, because despite the game being rated T, Bungie is trying to make a game for little children. Most of the people who play this game are either teens above the age of 15 or young adults. I don't see how this kind of thing would be appealing for them, because for me and many others (as seen in this thread), it certainly isn't.

TL;DR: The dialogue we heard in Homecoming was fine for the most part. The dialogue we heard in the strike is cringeworthy and even context cannot fix that. There's a difference between funny dialogue that doesn't feel out of place and cringeworthy dialogue that feels completely out of place. An example of this was Sgt Johnson from Halo. He was the perfect combination of comedy and seriousness in a character and it is what this game needs. On the other hand, our ghost, so far, sounds like a clown who's making bad jokes about everything at all times, and that isn't funny at all. This game is going to be the only chance this franchise gets to be taken seriously and to show us good character development. Sadly, it seems like that it's already failing at it. Just because the game is rated T doesn't mean it has to be made to appeal to little kids.
