Porn websites will require verification of age as of 2018

I think to some extent this solution actually pushes us in the wrong direction when it comes to children's safety. My thinking on this is that parents typically become more lax with monitoring their kids on the internet if they think it is a safe place.

Part of my job requires me to act as an ambassador for CEOP and train the children's workforce and parents in online safety. One of their stats that really concerns me is that the proportion of parents who think the internet is safe and regulated is actually increasing, yet sexting, CSE and access to pornography continues to rise. I think Cameron's idea of opt-out parental filters actually made this worse, as now the first thing a parent is greeted with when they sign up to an ISP is a big reassuring message that their provider will keep their kids safe online.

Unless you go full China, all this new law does is direct children to things like free VPN sites, which most parents wouldn't recognise. So even if you get a daily list of all the sites your child visits from the ISPs filtering software, you won't see what they're really up to. Obviously I have some bias in saying this, but better education to both children and adults is in my opinion the only way to actually bring the risks down.
