This is a great example of someone being recontextualized by an internet meme. Before his appearances with h3h3 you would never see your average redditor making off the wall comments like this. But now he's a "great" musician. Well, I can say with certainty, I find nothing great about his recent album.

Musically is sonically similar to Frank Ocean's recent work. It's definitely chasing the psychadelic r&b/pop trend going on right now. Anyone actually paying attention to hip hop recently(not getting their tastes from e celebs) knows the sound. It's been there done that at this point and there are far better artists crafting the sound.

Lyrically it's typical college hip hop. It's frankly embarrassing at times. Like, they wanted to chase the experimental vibe going on with artists like Chance the Rapper, but Post Malone just doesn't have it in him to write anything actually interesting. Example:

It's freezin' fuckin' cold in the dead of night

And I'ma drop the top with no Rogaine (skrrt, skrrt, skrrt)

And now might sound irrelevant but I prefer to stack my chips

When everything fallin' (backwoods)

And I ain't religious but I look into the sky

And pray to anyone holy

I been drinkin' way too much and man I got the blues

Because my baby don't hold me

Like really? All that lo fi reverb and jazzy beats for frat boy rap?

I just see this hype coming down to the fact that he's proven to be a pretty cool and down to earth guy. This is biasing peoples opinion of a mediocre at best artist.
