/r/Games Series Discussion - Call Of Duty

I played small bits of Call of Duty 3, and then played Modern Warfare through black ops 2 (fully), and then bits of Ghosts and Advanced Warfare.

Now that i've moved on to other games (I'm a Dark Souls freak), it's interesting to reflect on Call of Duty. I spent too many nights to count in high school, playing COD all night, music going in the background, mt. dew and snacks at my side (they really do go so amazingly together) (not doritos, though), and although I can't really play them anymore, they were like crack. Seriously.

I think the best single player campaign was the first Modern Warfare. I hadn't felt real tension and urgency in any games before this. I HAD to make it to the missile silos to stop the launch. And the ending is pretty well-known for good reason.

Modern Warfare 2 was my peak for multiplayer (although COD 4 was nearly as good, and set most of the foundation). I mean c'mon, anyone who first dived into COD areound MW2, they know what I mean. It was insanely addictive. Great weapons, amazing maps, solid killstreaks, fun progression, and just the whole atmosphere surrounding the game made it the legend that it is (in my eyes).

Black ops' mechanics didn't quite keep that addictiveness. Modern Warfare 3, i played a ridiculous amount of, but I can see how it doesn't compare to the previous 2. Black ops 2 was great fun, and was the best one since MW2. Ghosts and AW is where I became disillusioned, because frankly i think they're trash. But I mostly attribute that to how much Ive played the previous games.

Skid Row, Scrapyard, Highrise, Afghan, Favela, Sub Base, and Terminal will always have a special place in my heart.

I can't see COD lasting much longer. An idea I've had for the next Call of Duty would be to go meta. Idk how they would do it, but they can't restrain themselves to a single time period + realism for another game. They need to deconstruct the genre. A "Cabin in the Woods" of Call of Duty, if you will.
