Reading speed

I know yours is a technical question, but I just wanted to take the oportunity to point out that reading speed is utterly irrelevant. What's actually relevant is you understanding, retaining, and enjoying what you read, plus enriching your vocabulary and cultural knowledge.

The other day I was having a conversation with a friend of mine, who praises himself of reading many books rather quickly, about a book we both read. This book had a very interesting structure, a transgressive narrative style and some incredibly audacious ideas about evolution. While discussing the book with him I quiclky noticed that he didn't appreciate the art in the writting and was barely able to disuss the author's ideas.

It seems to me that he just wasted his time. I mean, what is the point in spending hours with a book if you are unable to absorbe, internalise and understand its content.
