It's real

Since the advent of postmodernism, the social sciences have emphasized a multidisciplinary approach to everything. This approach was meant to reveal deeper and more nuanced perspectives on difficult issues that straightforward modernist theories were insufficient to tackle. Unfortunately, as ideas have matriculated down through graduate and undergraduate programs over time, everything has gotten mixed together into some vague theory soup.

This also coincides with the privileging of subjective experience over the objective. Just remember to douse liberally with a healthy serving of mystery theory soup.

Mix it all together with overcrowded, corporatized academic institutions and a large band of fart-huffing, make-work administrators and “academics” and you get the present situation.

The social sciences are not completely lost, but the institutional incentives have run away with a bunch of the vague and indulgent aspects of postmodernism and it’s hard to say how to stop it.
