That’s...what...no...what?

First, all film discussion is usually lumped together as ‘critique,’ it’s a general term. Everyday use of the term usually refers to the type of short articles that come out with the film and inform whether an audience should see it, but those aren’t just “here’s my gut reaction” sans explanation or description of the film. They streamline everything about the film (including paratext like film theory, cultural context, and audience reaction when relevant) into an argument about the distinguishing qualities of the film. Paratext usually isn’t explicit in these types of articles but it always, to varying extents, informs the creation of the arguments (consciously or unconsciously).

Film scholars do deeper dives and approach different aspects of a film than quality-oriented approaches bring up, but they perform the same basic exercise of analyzing and evaluating a piece of art to make a point. And again, it’s all referred to as critique.
