The Reddit karma system is misunderstood

I can never wrap my head around why the downvote button exists at all, to be honest.

I mean, you like the post or comment? Upvote it.

You don't care about it? Ignore it.

You dislike it? Explain why in a comment so the person you address knows what they did wrong. That's what Reddit is, a place for conversation!

It's spam or against the rules? Report it.

The dislike button has no practical function that I can understand, it appears to only defeat the whole purpose of a forum, and it straight up seems inherently mean, at least to me.

That's just my opinion, of course, and if you think I'm wrong I'd be interested to reading your opinion so I can understand your point of view better. ☺️
