Redditors with mentally handicapped siblings, what has been your experience growing up with them? What is the worst and or greatest effect that they have had on your life?

Step brother is mentally handicapped, he is around 40, but has the mentality of a 10 year old...not so bad that kids under 9 recognize it though, and he can also hold a conversation over the phone well enough... and that is where the story begins...sit right down and I will tell you the story of the Dallas police man’s ball.

My stepbrother at the time went to a group home during the day so that he got some socialization. One day he calls up his friend (also special) and they chat back and forth pretending to be important political figures from the local area. My step brother decides that he is the recently appointed Chief of police for Dallas. No problem so far, just a couple of friends, living in a fantasy world and having a good time....

Once his friend and him had hung up though, my step brother was not done with the fantasy, oh no he wasn't...

He decided that he was going to throw a policeman’s ball for Dallas, and with the help of the house phone book contacts an actual catering company! Now, he has no speech problems, and since his fantasies get really involved (i mean really) he manages to convince the caterer that not only is he throwing a ball, for 1000 people... but it will be held in Austin....

So he makes all the arrangements, leaving the home phone number for call back. Once my dad comes home he gets a telephone call from the catering company. Guess who wants to smooth out some of the details...

As the lady explains to my dad everything that has so far been ordered (appetizers, meal, desserts, even an open bar) I guess the lady did one hell of a sales job! My dad calls my step brother into the room, and puts the lady on speaker phone... With a look that could only be face swapped from a deer staring down a Mac truck he denies everything, but cannot explain how this random lady knows his name, or phone number.

After the order was canceled the lady admitted that somethings my step brother said didn’t make sense, like she would know him, because he would be the one with a gun... and didn’t give a good explanation as to why the Dallas policeman’s ball was being held in Austin... but she called back one last time before beginning the process, and the whole thing was canceled a day away from my dad owing 100k in catering costs.

To answer the question though, he is happy, and doesnt have a negative thought in him, but he gets himself into trouble.

TLDR: Step brother orders 100k worth of food.
