Regarding those "useless" employees I've heard so much about...

This is a bit distressing, ngl. The vitriol toward management is a bit misplaced imo.

Anybody ever had a bad manager? Of course. Anybody ever had a good manager? Well, if you have, you know they're invaluable.

I mean, the ideal manager has an in depth understanding of the work they're overseeing and a more comprehensive understanding of logistics than the average worker would need. BUT also, crucially, they should be an emissary for the worker.

Or maybe they should work with that emissary. Sort of a union rep-management relationship? At the end of the day anything can be corrupted, and it's about finding the most efficient system to represent worker interests, as without the worker there is no ability to create value...

I'll just say I've worked in management, sales, customer service, logistics, production, and many combinations of the aforementioned roles.

Even as I've been outraged at a failson manager making more than I do, if you give me a truly competent and productive manager making the same amount as me I'm gonna be pissed. If they aren't getting paid more than I am, better believe I'm buying them a nice gift twice a year or even taking them on a weekend trip just to say "thanks for facilitating."
