Isn't there a better word to describe what it sounds like we all want?

This is actually a great point. I think a lot of anarchists are too attached to labels--particularly to a label which is heavily stigmatized. "Libertarian socialism" is a synonym of anarchism that has both better optics and greater clarity of meaning. Not only does it have fewer misconceptions, but it's actually descriptive of anarchism's prescriptions, as opposed to just being the Greek "an-archos"--"no rulers."

"Democratic socialism" also works since anarchists do believe in democracy, but it's more ambiguous since non-anarchists also use the term. IMO, as far as the US is concerned, if you're a socialist talking to a Democratic voter, say "democratic socialist," if you're talking to a Republican voter, say "libertarian socialist." 100% optics. Fuck labels.
