Reports of sexual assaults on women across European cities, including Cologne, Hamburg, Zürich, Salzburg, Helsinki during NYE festivities

Europe is facing a problem much bigger than the Euro crisis.

The Schengen treaty has effectively come to an end. Just a few months after Mrs. Merkel decided to let a million refugees in, border controls have been reinstated all over central Europe, even at borders where one hasn't needed a passport to cross since the 1950's. I completely understand her sentiment, we couldn't just let these people die, but the consequences are already beginning to show.

Britain seems committed to leaving the European Union. Cameron has promised a referendum on the matter, and the outcome already seems clear. It has already made him a lame duck in Europe. What's the point of negotiating with him now that the only two choices he has are leaving the EU or breaking his promise and retiring from politics?

The Netherlands are one badly timed terror attack or Cologne incident away from doing the same. Two parties (extreme 'left' and extreme 'right') that want to leave the EU have a solid majority in the polls. The only major difference between in policy between these two parties is the reason why they're against immigration: one sees the presence of Muslims as an existential threat, the other sees immigration as an economic threat to the working class. Elections are in early 2017 at the latest, but more likely by this summer or fall. A major immigrant related incident shortly before the elections might make these two extreme parties step over their philosophical aversion to each other's background and form a coalition.

I'm not happy about this. I quite like the open borders, the common currency and the peace and stability the European Union brought. I'm shocked to see what little it took to take the open borders away. I wonder how much it will take to take the rest away.
