Why do we roll dice?

I think dice is a fine mechanic, as long as the rules around it are good. If I step outside my house IRL, and walk across the street, I could get hit by a crazed maniac doing 100mph through my neighborhood. That's unlikely, but not impossible. IRL, we make choices, like going outside or crossing the street, but there are a billion factors outside of our control, randomness happens all the time. Even in RPG combat, rolling dice makes sense, unless you are playing as some kind of omniscient god, even the most skilled warrior can't account for a gust of wind on their arrow, or the opponent moving slightly just before you swing your sword, causing you to fail to connect.
