Pros and Cons of separating Sneak into Hide and Move Silently?

My point is, in real life, you know this weird alternative universe that has nothing to do with d20 land, stealth and camouflage are two entirely different disciplines. I know this from nearly 20 years of active duty and multiple tours in Iraq. Clandestine (sneak) operations, we called them insertion and exfiltration, require extensive training but had very little overlap with hiding in place. Detection avoidance is all about preparation. Camouflage attire just scratches the surface. A great deal of time and energy is spent on improving your DFP (defensive fighting position) to maximize protection and minimize visibility/detectability. You need to become a master of your environment, whether we're talking about urban warfare or ambushing prey in the jungle. The OP mentioned survival/exploration not dungeon crawl, so I think the distinction is relevant. The US Army has simply codified what humans and animals were instinctively/informally doing for millions of years. If his hiding skill is essentially B/X "hide in shadows", then I retract my position.
