If you think he's doing the same taunts every match, you're not watching his matches. He "knows his character" means exactly what it says. If he's a heel, he plays the part pretty well with taunts and interacting with the crowd.

Acting like his charisma didn't play a part him in being over during his first run is stupid. Ryback in his original run was more over than any of the monster characters they've made, and that's because his charisma pushed him over the top.

Same shit they did with Daniel Bryan after Wrestlemania 30, they put him in an acting intensive feud with Kane when neither he nor Brie are good actors, and the crowd couldn't give less of a shit for all of the segments.
