Scott Morrison is our next prime minister!

The Australian political system might be flawed in the sense that they keep having leadership spills but I really hope no one gets the impression that our political system isn't flawed. Just two examples:

  1. Unlike in Australia, for our electorate vote, we don't have ranked voting. Why is this a problem? All of our electorates (except 1) were won by a major party. Why? Because if you don't have ranked voting, people end up voting for a safe party to avoid splitting the vote. It's also a problem because this means there are MPs who won their electorates with less than 50% of the vote. There is one electorate where the winning candidate got 38.30% of the vote. I sometimes laugh about it because of how bad it is that a candidate can win an electorate without the majority of people voting for them.

  2. We also have a party vote which entitles a party to a share of the seats in Parliament but a party needs to pass the 5% threshold in order for this to happen. Again, it results in people voting for a safe party because they're worried about voting for a minor party that doesn't pass the 5% threshold thus wasting their vote.
