Search for 43 missing students in Mexico turns up corpses of at least 129 other people

Kind of misses my point. Crime and violence is absolutely NOT "every day life" for me, or 99% of Americans. For one, 100 tourists being murdered anywhere in the states is absurd and has never happened. Second, my comparison with Chicago was only to describe how crime statistics aren't necessarily a good metric for your personal safety. In some places, I'm sure the statistics are more handy, but in others they aren't at all. My point is that this is an intricate subject. I am not calling "crime safety out of touch with reality", I am saying that looking at crime statistics in a city without looking at where, why, and how the crimes are occurring is definitely out of touch with reality. My example was Chicago because despite those statistics, Chicago is obviously incredibly clean, safe, and absolutely a "developed" city. Tourists and locals do not feel at risk here, even walking late at night. It is by far one of the finest cities in the world, and I've been to damn near all the major ones.

The reasons statistics aren't necessarily good metrics for your personal safety differ for each city, but in Chicago this is because the crime is overwhelmingly gang related, and overwhelmingly isolated to 3 neighborhoods on the farthest outskirts of the city. More than 90% of the crimes happen to 18-24 year old black males, and the majority of the rest are collateral damage from those shootings. Looking at the crime maps, more than 99% (and I mean that number literally) of these crimes occur in the neighborhoods of Garfield park, the bad areas of Humboldt park, or the far south side. These are not places that tourists, or every day people travel, ever. You would have to be profoundly stupid to go exploring these areas, as it is immediately and blatantly apparent that violent crime, drugs, and overall lawlessness run rampant. You would be more than likely be stopped by a police officer and escorted away immediately.

It definitely sucks that these slums exist in some of the greatest American cities. I agree that some cities do not have these downtrodden areas to the same extent. But it is not realistic to point at these slums and say things like "Crime and violence is just everyday life for you". Thats honestly just fucking retarded, and means you clearly have never visited the one city I've referenced. Making your comment even more ironically out of touch.
