Seeing as everyone is posting videos of when they broke off holds, here’s me breaking off a foothold during a comp a while back.

It is the same length of fall, that's not the question you asked though.

To be more clear, an example.
Let's assume 4m between bolts.

Clipping waist height would make a 8 m drop if you fall when trying to clip.
8m =4m to previous bolt + 4m rope

High clipping, lets say waist at 3 meter above the bolt, reach 1 meter high to clip the next one.
That is 3 meters to waist, 2x 1 meter to reach high = 5m rope.
8m = 3m waist to previous bolt + 5m rope.

If the lower bolt of the 2 is 6 m above the floor, waist clipping would save you from doing a grounder.

At higher heights it wouldn't matter that much.

A bit of a side note, but sometimes I THINK I would still consider clipping high if I felt I had a more secure hold than I would higher up, or if I was on my first clip.

Please be aware of what I stated above.

And please be aware that most people that bolt routes, aim at bolting at the position where an easy position on the wall and waist clipping come together.

I've been in many situation aiming for a high clip because it felt it was going to be hard. And at waist height realised my position was way better for clipping.
