In most of the green countries of the map everyone already has Whatsapp. You install any other app and if you are lucky you have one or two contacts with the app. Whatsapp is a standard and literally required.

Trying to move *everyone* to another app is just impossible. At best you would get what happens in America, with everyone using a thousand apps and being impossible to keep track of what app their contacts use, so everyone just falls back to SMS.

Plus, even if you manage to move *the entire country* to another messaging app, it has the exact same problem as Whatsapp, centralization and dependency.

What is needed is a system that is decentralized and encrypted, private would be nice, but I don't think its possible.

RCS goes halfway there, its decentralized, but it still lacks encryption.
