In a self-defense situation, you shouldn't be forced to worry about criminal's well-being.

Its also largely not true. You have every right to defend yourself and your property in Canada to a reasonable extent. That extent is determined by the attacker, so if they come at you with a gun you can shoot them in your home or beat them with a bat. You can also have a weapon in your house for self defence there are just a number of reasonable restrictions on this.
