Self employed?

Hey, I used to own a web development company. Want some free advice? Find local businesses around you that have shitty sites and completely rebuild them, make them amazing, and then present the finished site to a business. Speak in business terms, like: this new feature will improve conversions by x% based on a similar transition made by y company in 2012. Or, the new load times for your site will increase customer retention by a projected x%.

The biggest thing I've learned? It doesn't matter how successful you are if you let success get to your head. Relationships with friends/family/so's are much more valuable than any dollar figure. Make sure you keep a balanced life.

Mental health is very important when running a business. I don't have any specific advice here except the usual: sleep a minimum of eight hours a day, eat healthy, exercise as much as you can. Don't use performance enhancing drugs like modafinil or adderall, etc. to increase your productivity.

Always be professional, always. Never let emotions cloud how you treat people. One of your most valuable assets is your reputation.

Go above and beyond for your clients. Do whatever it takes to make them happy, even when they're wrong or being shitty.

When you start pulling in cash, make sure to keep a very large (20k+) rainy day fund incase shit hits the fan legally, health-wise, or whatever you can dream up. This has saved me on more than one occasion.

Learn Ruby on Rails, it is exactly what you need to know in today's web development environment.

If you would like a mentor, I'm free and always enjoy seeing/helping other people succeed. PM me if you're interested.

Best of luck on your journey, don't give up, ever!
