[Serious] How do background checks work?

Can someone explain to me how this business works? When I was in Thailand recently, investigators have offices on the corner like a lawyer or doctor would (wasn't there long enough to understand the culture so maybe deception is more prevalent?).

Anyways, I'm guessing the amount of the bill will depend on who I'm investigating? Similar to expecting a large legal bill if I needed to sue a major corporation? The richer the person, the more time and money the investigation will cost?

So, a guy without a pot to piss in would take a day or two because the PI doesn't have to worry about the guy setting up shell companies, Swiss Bank accounts, private islands and the like?

And several months to years if you're talking billion dollar mergers needing forensic accounting, regulatory approval and everything?
