[Serious] Do you have a story that you can't explain yet you can't decide if you believe in ghosts?

I can share my story to get the ball rolling. It's nothing huge but I can't at all explain it.

Back in 2011, I was ordering stuff from Amazon on a regular basis and I was always excited to check on the mail when it arrived. My street is kind of odd - there are homes on one side and the other side drops off to a small brook. Behind the homes is a sudden and steep hill where there are other homes on a more traditional street. The hill is probably 120 feet or so. You could climb it but not without being extremely obvious about it. The drop to the brook is something you couldn't easily climb down safely. Both of these streets come out to a main road together kind of. My street's mailboxes are all at the start of the road, where they meet the main road.

So anyway, one day I decide to check the mail. My street is straight with a slight bend that you just barely can't see around and that bend is about 300 feet from my house towards the main road/mailboxes. As I leave to check the mail, I'm looking down to the other end of the road - nobody. No cars, no neighbors, it's empty. I start walking and I walk past the curve. I continue walking and as I'm nearing the mailboxes, I suddenly feel the need to turn around. There's some person staring off the side of the road towards the brook. I instantly knew they were smoking but their hand was nowhere near their mouth. Now there is only 1 house between me and the mailboxes and this isn't my only neighbor and this person certainly wasn't in that spot when I walked by it ~30 seconds prior. Where did they come from? More importantly it's fucking pouring and the only reason I'm outside in this is because I'm a nutjob for my package to arrive. Nobody should be out smoking in this unless it was their doorstep or something.

Anyway I ignore it and go to the mailboxes. I check the mail and return down towards my house. At the exact spot I remember turning around and seeing this person, they hop into the road (without ever looking towards me) and head on down towards the houses. The street is like 1.5 cars wide and isn't busy at all. So we're walking and walking and just as they near the bend that you can't see beyond, I think I hear a car slowly coming up behind me so I turn for less than a second's time, immediately recognize that there's no car so I don't need to move to the side of the road and turn back and this person is instantly gone. I was terrified but was trying to keep my cool because the bend is there. While I know for a fact they didn't have the time to make it out of my line of sight based on the distance between us LET ALONE IT WAS LESS THAN A SECOND that I was turned around, I'm too self conscious to make a huge deal of this so I start walking as quickly as humanly possible without actually running. I get exactly one inhaled whiff of cigarette smoke and then never smell it again. I power towards this bend and I can now see the entire road- nobody. It's not someone that went into my neighbor's house and they sure as shit didn't go into mine. They couldn't even have made it to my neighbor's house. They didn't go up the hill to the street next to/above mine because I would've seen them and there's no way they went down into the brook - though I absolutely did look. Moreso they were in the middle of the road just like me. They would have had to known exactly when my head was turned so they could sprint and jump off the road and like I said, they never turned around.

This person disappeared entirely. They appeared unexplicably and then disappeared in the <1 second time I stopped looking at them. What's more, I can't at all tell you what color their clothes were. I can tell you they were wearing jeans so I assume they were blue and they had a dark hooded sweatshirt. I couldn't tell you if it was black, maroon, hunter, navy, blue and black or gold and white - no idea -just a general understanding that it was a dark color.

I don't know. I don't think every ghostly encounter is going to be The Sixth Sense and I'm Haley Joel Osment but this was such an insignificant thing. I can't at all explain where they came from or where they disappeared to but I also can't convince myself it was a ghost.

Sorry that's so disappointing.
