You should not be turned down for scholarships or universities for not doing community service or extracurriculars.

Not sure why you're getting so downvoted, but I completely agree. It doesn't take that much effort to do tiny community service throughout the week. Also, HELLOOOOO, summer is 3 months long. Don't be mad about a university turning you down if you bummed every summer of high school for 3 months. Any university would appreciate even an hour a week over the summer at a soup kitchen or a part-time job.

It sounds like this girl didn't get turned down for lack of community service but because she didn't know how to form her application. If she was doing little things w/o attending big charity events (like OP said), she should have put that in her application. If family events were keeping her from being really involved outside of school, she should've put that in her application.
