Christianity has done very well, over the millennia. It is not just the religion with the largest number of members, it is also the predominant religion both of Europe and of the United States of America, which have both been centers of economic, cultural, political and military power in the world. Christianity is not actually responsible for the success of the Western world, although it is happy to claim responsibility for what was mostly the work of scientists and inventors. Bur Christianity benefits by its association with a successful civilization that has had a global reach. All the great revolutionary movements and technologies and art forms have arisen in Christian countries. Everyone drinks Coca Cola, watches American movies, wears blue jeans, uses American computers and American computer software, and so forth. The internet was invented in America. Mass production was invented in America. Nuclear weapons. The space program. America is very impressive, and it is predominantly Christian. Christians are therefore generally happy with the state of their religion - they may complain a lot, but they have done well.

Islam was at one time, prior to the Renaissance period in Europe, the world's leading culture, with the best mathematics, astronomy, chemistry (or alchemy as it was known at the time), the best architecture, the most civilized societies. Muslims were happy that they, the faithful believers in the One True Religion, enjoyed the prominence that they deserved. Then the tide shifted. Europe increasingly overshadowed the Muslim world and even colonized it. European industrialization left Islam behind. Muslim nations were torn apart by European armies, the Ottoman Empire fell, borders were re-drawn, and the Muslim world was seen as just a source of cheap petroleum. Meanwhile, in 1948 Palestine became Israel and some of the holiest sites of Islam fell under Jewish control (as they remain to this day). The whole Muslim sense of identity was undermined. Muslims who knew themselves to be the most important people on Earth, and custodians of the One True Faith, became subsidiary to Christians and Jews. So, as these insults grew ever more bitter, eventually a great determination arose to get revenge. And so they have been getting revenge, with increasing violence. Muslims discovered that the decadent Western world, where women dare to display their hair in public, can be hurt. And they are thrilled. So now, the carnival of death and destruction is a way of life, with proliferating terrorist groups and daily bloodshed. Islam has learned to assert itself.
