(Spoilers Extended) Game of Thrones Season 7, Episode 7: The Dragon and the Wolf Morning After Post-Episode Discussion

So the Jon thing about not lying to Cersei—in the moment, I was afraid he might do it and anger Dany. That feeling was a little validated by her immediate reaction shot, where she seemed gratified and … aroused? That he said it in front of everyone.

Then she got on the “bash idiot honorable Jon” bandwagon, which is lame. It’s her mercurial nature in a nutshell: she’s committed to fighting the WWs, but really likes the validation Jon just gave her. But also she’s angry. I guess it makes her “complex”, if not consistent.

So, Dany’s a wildcard in that situation—on the surface, they’re suggesting she would have been fine with the lie. But they’ve also built her up over the whole season as incredibly sensitive to loyalty questions (witness her tense chat with Tyrion last episode over lines of succession as just one example).

The anger should be about Cersei’s stupid demand, not Jon being a man of his word. For me it’s not about how stupid Jon is. He’s nothing if not upfront: this is the fight and he’s not going to play politics with Cersei, who, despite the demonstration, still doesn’t get it. She’s the idiot in that sequence.

One thing I wish he would have done is hit the “if you don’t join us, we’ll be back … as part of the Army of the Dead” angle a lot harder.

Also too, I’m pretty sure Cersei was playing Jon against his allies there anyway—she obviously never intended to join the effort, but she has Jon pegged as Ned Stark’s son and guesses if he’s anything like Ned, he’d respond that way.

She gets to storm off in a huff, then come back like she’d reconsidered. If she’d agreed too easily, it might have been suspicious.

And if Jon had lied, it would have put a crack in his relationship with Dany even if in the immediate short term it would have served their goals.
