‘Make It So’: Star Trek's Debt to Revolutionary Socialism

DS9 has a two part episode called "Past Tense" where Sisko, Bashir, and Dax are sent back in time to 2024. Sisko and Bashir end up in a Sanctuary District where anybody unemployed or without ID are sent until the government finds them jobs (guess how long that takes). Dax is taken in by a rich man and we mostly see men in in the district. This is a visual way of saying men are more affected by homelessness. I don't know about 1995, but 2011 statistics show that between 80% and 90% of homeless people in the US are men. I suppose Dax was lucky a rich guy found her though.

Sisko and Bashir have differing opinions on Sanctuary Districts. Bashier thinks it's monstrous from the start while Sisko thinks they are great because of what they led to. It isn't until Sisko has to face the reality of a Sanctuary District that he realizes things are not as good as he thinks. In the end Sisko is forced to lead a riot because the person who actually took part was killed due to his interference. The National Guard bust in and shoot everybody. There's a great scene where Sisko goes off on a security guard that has no idea why people are rioting despite working in the Sanctuary District for years.

It's a great two parter since it directly goes after treatment of the homeless and mentally ill. They're just put out of sight and ignored. I like how the writers worked in the need of the Prime Directive with Sisko's interference killing the guy that was supposed to lead the riots. It also seems the writers don't believe the treatment of the homeless will stop without violence. This fits with the rest of Star Trek, in which a nuclear war occurred followed by a post-atomic horror before any real progress started happening.
