That's about $450 markup. The product page says a 120GB SSD so that's all I included, but I'd expect them to throw at least a 1TB drive in there too. Add another $50 or so to that price and we still have a $400 difference.
Now, I used basically the cheapest parts I could find. If I were personally building this PC, I'd go with a 4690K, a Z97 mobo, a module power supply, and a nicer case.

This is closer in price, but it's still $100 cheaper, includes a 1TB drive in addition to an SSD twice as big, and thanks to the unlocked CPU, would outperform the Steam Machine, especially once you did a little overclocking. The bigger case would give you more room for airflow letting you push harder without having to worry about thermals.
