Streetcar driver facing charges in death of 80-year-old pedestrian

From what I saw, the pedestrian was technically j-walking, but was also slow moving, very visible (off-white jacket and chrome walker), and the streetcar looked like it was going faster than I'd expect it to when pulling up to a stop.

The driver said on the scene, and I quote:

"ya I was stopping, the stop's right there"

If he was breaking for the stop I wouldn't expect him to be going 30 when in the intersection right before the stop.

I didn't put any of this speculation in the police report obviously, but this was a tough accident.

My biggest regret, and one I'll probably be thinking about for years, is this: I turned and checked to see if that guy had made it across ok, when I was about 20 yards from the intersection when the lights changed. He was still crossing, and I said to myself "I hope that guy stops at the platform and doesn't cross the tracks while it's red, that streetcar is moving pretty fast"

But then, I thought "I'm sure he'll be fine, don't be paranoid". Pretty much as I said that to myself he crossed the tracks without even really looking (at least, that's how it appeared from my angle) and was immediately hit by a streetcar.

So basically, I couldn't have sprinted and tackled him or anything, but I probably could have yelled which may have stopped him from walking, or ran in front of the streetcar with my arms waving. I probably could have figured out something if I'd taken the threat more seriously and had better depth perception, and realized how far into the tracks he was.

Fuckin guy might have lived or not been hit at all. Not sure how I feel about myself after that, I always assumed that I'd leap into action if something like this was about to happen infront of me. Guess I'm not the person I think I am in the shower
