I survived...

I keep seeing this kind of thing and it kills the joke for me a little bit. Yes, the hashtags are funny; that's why Jay posted this. I don't mind so much that Dana pointed this out, but then there are people who insist on sharing Dana's reaction to a joke instead of the joke itself and, personally, it turns what would have otherwise evoked a silly grin that lingers for a second or two to a silly grin that fades very quickly.

I'm not saying it's done maliciously. I'm pretty sure this kind of thing doesn't happen because we don't understand that what Jay said is funny. My best guess is that this image came from someone who is friends with Dana on facebook. Dana found Jay's comment one way or another and decided to share it with her friends. However, instead of just sharing it, she decided to add a comment to it; probably out of habit. Then one of Dana's friends saw this and did what Dana should have done in the first place - share it as is.

It's like when you're talking to someone and you manage to muster up a killer one-liner out of nowhere only to be reciprocated with a "That's so funny!" instead of laughter. At best, you accept it at face value and it's about on par with the would-be laugh. At worst, it kills the mood and makes you kind of regret making the joke in the first place.

By commenting on it, Dana has unintentionally added another layer of work for anyone who wants to share the source material. It could be argued that one or two clicks to access the original comment isn't worth mentioning in this scenario. I'd agree if it weren't for the instant gratification we've been taught to embrace online. I'm not saying that's a bad thing. I'm saying that I personally would prefer if a more "look before you leap" attitude were prevalent over the "Gotta go fast" attitude that seems to be everywhere. That is, I feel prioritizing quality over quantity when it comes to participating in social networking would do more good than harm.

Anyway, that's my two cents.
