This also can be said in this way: A life of rest and peace in the Tao is good; a life of pain lived in patience is still better; but to have peace in a life of pain is best of all.

An easy life isn't normal. Life usually, for most of the human beings, is full of strife, pain, illness, poverty.

Returning to the root means rest. It signifies the return according to destiny. Return according to destiny means the eternal. Knowing the eternal means enlightenment. Not knowing the eternal causes passions to rise; and that is evil. [Tao Te Ching 16,2]
