Ted Cruz tries to get a hug from his daughter.

As a parent, youhave to place your hands on your kids when they refuse to behave properly. Not putting your winter clothes, and not leaving the house, with the rest of the family is simply not an option when you're a child. If you have to go somewhere, and it means manhandling your kids to get their clothes on, then it must be done. No self-respecting parent is going to bend to the will of a fussy child. A parent can't be sheepish about these sorts of things. They have to make sure their kids get used to doing certain things they would prefer not to do, instead of enabling undesireable behaviours. Weak parents who don't put their foot down end up having terribly behaved children, even to the point of letting their kids slap them around when they are older. Sorry, that is simply not an option.

My 4 month old doesn't like the feeling of being dressed. He hates it and almost always cries bloody murder. The same goes for putting him in his car seat. Do you think I really have any option to bargain with him? No, he's going into his car seat.

Giving your parents a hug is a display of affection, and his daughter was going to hug them whether she liked it or not. It is extremely important for a man in his position to have his family behave properly, and doing that when millions of people watching must be terrifying.

It is obvious in this thread that anyone with the slightest shred of basic parenting know-how completely understand what is going on. Many children, like myself, were explained by our parents the reasons they acted a certain way, and how our behaviour makes them feel, and how hard it is to deal with a fussing child. These are parenting lessons, and I have a strong suspicion that these brats who are saying, "oh he's violating that poor girl's personal space, that monster!" never had any such conversations with their parents on an ongoing basis growing up. As you grow up you're expected to be able see these types of childish behaviours from the parent's perspective, take what they have taught you, and apply it to your own decision making. For example, when I watch Louis C.K. clips from his show when he gives very powerful parenting lessons, it blows my fucking mind, as he basically shits on people who make excuses for being misbehaved.
