These guys aren’t there to do stupid shit like repos, or HOA calls. These trucks are there specifically from the CHP, and their job is simply to get cars off the freeway, and keep traffic moving.

They operate during peak traffic hours, and provide free assistance (technically we the taxpayers pay for it, so it’s not free, but you get the point). They’ll tow cars off the freeway to a safe place just off the freeway where the owner can then call a tow company. If you run outa gas, they’ll give you a spare gallon.

In this area (video is San Jose CA) waiting for a tow truck during peak hours can easily be an hour long ordeal because they’re often towing to a shop or home, so it takes them far longer to do a tow, whereas these trucks just get you off the highway, drop and move on. My buddy’s fuel pump went out on his car one day during commute hours, and he was stuck in a bad spot. The CHP guys arrived in minutes got him to the next exit, and it was another hour and a half till the AAA truck arrived to take the car to a shop.
