Thursday General Discussion

Where should we start? Mass killings due to paranoia that go as far back as Lenin, probably even further. I don't know if the term 'mass killings' does it justice since we're talking about tens of millions of people. People were killed because of their race. They were killed due to their so-called political affiliations. I say 'so-called' because they were turned in by others who were being tortured. The torture wouldn't stop until they named names. And then, there's the Gulags, which were basically concentration camps. People were made to work until they basically died. They didn't have warm clothing, barely had food, weren't given breaks, and worked 20+ hour days. If Adolf Hitler hadn't broken the treaty he made with Stalin that split Poland down the middle and attacked Russia, Stalin said they could've been best of friends. During the same time Hitler had his concentration camps, Stalin had his Gulags. On a sidenote, the first 1.5 million Jews who were killed during the holocaust were shot to death and buried in mass graves mostly in east Russia which is now Ukraine and Belarus.

The Cold War started when World War II ended. Russia pushed the Nazis back to Berlin and claimed East Germany while the US claimed the West. They collided with each other, which gave birth to the Berlin Wall. The Cold War was a 40 year long dick-waving contest between the 2 counties. Even after the fall of the USSR and the KGB, there is a former KGB member as Russia's president: Vladimir Putin. Much of Russia's policies haven't changed. There are numerous sources that says the Russian government bussed in thousands of people to build the Olympic facilities in Sochi without paying them. These probably should be regarded as rumors since I haven't found definitive proof, but there are numerous sources. Sochi is even the site of the ethnic cleansing of the Circassian people.
