There a number of food banks that give food away throughout the week. They usually give you a couple grocery bags worth of food. Sometimes they give you flowers as well. This is in Southern California. Most of the homeless people I have been friends with were homeless because they either wanted to be, had a drug problem, had an unmanaged mental disorder or just didn't want to work.
Us Americans are a pretty entitled folk and most of us are unwilling to take a temp job, work for minimum wage or move to an area where there is more work.
We like our drugs too, even though there are AA, NA, etc meetings 5 times a day in every city. If your serious about quoting drugs there are literally 100s of people within a few miles willing to support you and help you during your recovery. Many times these people will foster people as well.
The mental health aspect still needs a lot of work IMO. Though I've seen a positive direction in the last ten years since the gov had pushed to better integrate people with mental problems instead just hiding them away. Like I said still needs work but I think it's moving in the right direction.
I forget which state it was but one was or was in the process of providing homes to the homeless. I think that it was having positive results and was being studied by other states as well.
The USA is a big place though and each state is like its own little country and deals with these issues in their own way.
