TIL that Joe Rogan paid $10,000 for a T1 internet connection in order to play Quake without lag.

Dependent on how early in the 90's it was probably 10k a month.

Some reminiscing here.

Father worked with computers sometimes at home. Business he worked offered to give him a 5 megabit cable-like connection back when the 1.4megabit T1 was already considered dated and people had T3 and much faster available (if you had the money). I think 1999 time frame since I remember Starcraft BW on the 5 megabit connection (downloading custom maps in 3-4 seconds vs 10-20 lol). My father said that the cable setup cost them 10k to setup and $500 a month to maintain. Considering a t1 and similar was thousands a month from any local telephone company, the price they paid for him was pretty good.

I was booted from so many CS, Tribes, Quake 3, UT etc. servers for abnormally low ping it was totally bananas. The low ping barely helped too. So many insta deaths from people being in completely wrong locations. Sometimes me getting a nice headshot and it not registering because I had 20-80 ping and people had 500-2000+ regularly. I will admit when the servers were more harsh about ping, I did like being stable. When I jumped and then ran, I never teleported, which happened all the time at friends houses. I couldn't even play the Dreamcast online at first because the modem only had RJ-45 10 meg cables, and DC initially sold with a RJ11 I am pretty sure

We kept that 5 meg until 2003 when xbox live got big. Then got a 5/1 connection from TWC that we had until 2006, really helped with Steam also. Jumped to a 10/2 in 06 going to 07 for CoD3 on 360 and soon to be Halo3. I think in 09 we made the jump to 20/5. Then when I moved out a few years later I bought a 300/300 which was upgraded free to 500/500 because of local competition. I can't imagine using anything less than maybe 50/50 today.
