TIL that Late last year, the Army launched an accelerated effort into training and equipping 26 of its 31 active combat brigades to fight in large-scale subterranean facilities that exist beneath dense urban areas around the world.

I’m no longer in the Army, but I took part in this training at a fairly high level where I was involved in the actual planning at the Brigade level figuring out how the hell are we actually going to fight in this weird environment. It also wasn’t just late last year. I definitely did the training in 2018 at the latest, maybe earlier. I don’t remember. And I had past coworkers who had done it even earlier than that who I remember asking for advice from so it’s definitely been happening for a while.

Even though it’s not secret information to the best of my knowledge, I don’t feel super comfortable explaining all the details, but I will say for the most part, the results of the training boiled down to the Army realizing two big things:

1: No one, regardless of rank or experience, has any clue whatsoever how to fight in this environment effectively and if we ever have to actually do this, it’s going to be a disastrous mess.

And

2: Holy shit so many more people are going to die than we’re used to, and there’s almost nothing we can do about it in a subterranean environment.
