TIL Rich neighbors refused to let George Lucas build a studio, so he’s building affordable housing instead. "We’ve got enough millionaires here."

The fact that you don't see segregation, self or otherwise, as a problem is the root of the problem.

The fact that you apparently think everyone is the same is rather silly. You're telling me you don't segregate yourself? Do you hang out with the bums on skid row? Do you walk through the worst part of town in the middle of the night? Please, tell me that there is no one in society that you think is more worthy of spending time with than someone else. Sure, in a world where life was an eternity of time, then everyone is worth spending time with. But in this world, of limited time, I'm going to want to optimize who I spend time with. Are you going to tell me that drunk bum in the gutter is just as interesting to live next door to as (say) Stephen Hawking? Or John Stewart? Or Bill Gates? Or Bernie Sanders? Or Noam Chomsky?

elitist use of the phrase "cultural peers".

Spare me your cultural guilt. I'm guessing your one of those people who think "culture" is a code word for "racism", which is completely dumb, but a lot of people think it. Culture is not "elitist", it's culture, unless you think there is no such thing as culture. In that case, I can't help you.

I have no problem with spending time with worthy people of whatever income level. And I have no problem recognizing some people are more worthy than others. If you're wringing your hands over the concept of "worthy", then get over it, because it's perfectly legitimate, and you do exactly the same thing (just with the added ridiculous guilt).

On the other hand, who was it that said that if the poor knew how the rich truly lived there would be riots?

Maybe there would be, but that doesn't mean they would be legitimate riots. That presupposes that the poor are only poor because the rich steal their money. Which I have no doubt people like you believe, but it's completely untrue.

The truth is, people like you do far more damage to the poor than the rich could ever do, because you believe that the poor are victims with no power to change their circumstances, and that attitude is so poisonous and cruel. Your solution to the poor is to hang the rich (and keep the poor in the same situation). My solution to the poor is education, inspiration, encouragement and make it easier to climb out of poverty.
