Different forms of lead, different dangers. Tetraethyl lead, which was used in gasoline, is easily and quickly absorbed into the skin and lungs from contact with vapors or liquid. Simple contact with lead paint on the wall isn't the same. That's not saying that lead paint is safe or anything, but leaded gasoline was a much bigger threat to public safety because it was in the fumes of literally every car traveling on the road, while lead paint usually just sits on a wall and is most dangerous to the general public while it's curing. Once set on the wall, physical ingestion is the main cause of toxicity (the infamous paint chips or sanding residue), while simply breathing near a running leaded gasoline car or spilling some on your hand at the gas station is enough to get exposed.
