University Student to face $200,000 bill for "racist" Facebook post.

I don't know about interracial dating, it probably doesn't happen more because of large cultural differences and what people find attractive rather than any social stigma (but I don't know how things are from their side).

Australia can be very racist but our version of American black/white is more likely to be about asians or middle eastern people. I'm sure it's all over the country but Queensland is famously racist. There is definitely racism against aboriginal people too but it's a much bigger problem. With asian or middle eastern people it's mostly just dickheads that have a problem with skin colour or people who look different. In terms of descrimination against aboriginal people it's a much deeper problem because it's based on real problems, it's not just about how someone looks.

Like in a job, we think "well for fuck sake, just turn up to your shifts and stop fighting everyone and we would be ok" but then you find out they didn't turn up to their shifts and were emotional because in the last week alone they had two family members murdered, a brother put in prison and their niece was taken by child services.

They have real problems and issues they deal with every day that are behind a lot of these problems and they aren't one-off events, many have trouble with basic comprehension. As an employeer you have to face the real possibility of dealing with these types of problems the entire time they are employed. Even though it's not their fault.. do i really want to be the one to absorb the responsibility and costs associated with these problems while trying to run my business? Especially when their job application is a whole other level below the other applicants.

I used to be really against affirmative action but now I realise I was taking a view that was much too simplistic, how can you ever expect them to climb out of the cycle when their history and circumstances almost garauntee that they wont ever be the best applicant for a job. Obviously it's not all aboriginal people but it's a widespread problem especially with small rural communities.
