Weekday Help and Victory Thread for the week of December 19, 2022

The answers I've found so far are a little mixed on this, but I'll try asking here too:

I live at home with my parents in California and will soon start paying rent to them. What steps would I or my parents need to take in order for this to be accepted by a future prospective landlord as legitimate rental history?

Answers I've seen so far:

  • Don't do anything special. Just list my parent(s) as my current landlord and have them confirm that I paid X rent for an Y period of time.
  • The above, but also make sure to pay with checks or online transfers so there's evidence in my banking statements.
  • The above, and also have my parents sign receipts for every payment.
  • Some combination of the above, and also make sure that the parent who has a different last name than me is listed as the landlord.
  • Treat this as if we aren't family. Get a notarized rental agreement. File taxes accordingly.
  • Alternatively, my parents could add me to their lease.

I've also seen people say that I shouldn't bother worrying about rental history at all. However, it was a major obstacle for my sibling last year when she moved out, even with my parents acting as guarantors, so I do believe it's a valid concern.

Thank you for any advice you can give.
