Man, this hits close to home. My elderly mom is a hoarder (not as bad as OP's pics but still a hoarder) out of depression. She just buys things in an endless cycle of searching for fulfilment in her old age and lets garbage accumulate because she's so depressed about her life, with the state of her house contributing greatly to that. Twice a year I drive a few states over to her home and try and help her clean up. I usually bring my carpet shampooer and clean up the various messes and such her cats make, and give her a new vaporizer pen to replace her cigarettes again.

It helps a lot for a short time but eventually she falls back down in that rut and starts accumulating pointless stuff, stops cleaning, and starts smoking again. It really sucks to see her physical and mental health slowly decline like this, but she can't afford help and simply won't accept anything from me other than what I already do.

Sorry for the rant, she just happened to visit us today and reading your response dredged up some feelings on my end...
