What are some helpful things you can do for a friend or family member who is in the hospital? [Serious]

If they are confined to the hospital bed, it quickly becomes the closest feeling a lot of people will have to spending time in jail/solitary confinement. You can't even move without asking for permission much less go to the bathroom.

The days start melding together and you kind of lose track of things like time or day and night become a blur since all of your routines are disrupted down to when you brush your teeth or take a shower and all the sleeping.

Pick a time / day and visit them, give them some kind of routine to hang on to so their lives don't spin away. Talk and be with them, but remember it's hard to spend a lot of time in a hospital setting so don't burn yourself out. Its very easy to do especially if you deeply care about the person in the hospital as it's a heavy mental burden that builds up very quickly.

Keep them up with current events of their life so they still have connection to something outside of the hospital room.
